2 PhD positions in monitoring tropical forest carbon and links to agriculture for REDD+

Description:

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) together with the Centre for Geo-Information at Wageningen University (NL) is offering two PhD positions to perform four-year research as part of the coordinated global comparative study on REDD, a research project studying REDD preparation, demonstration activities and national initiatives in selected countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. The project consists of four components: (1) national REDD initiatives (policy processes and strategies), (2) demonstration activities, (3) monitoring and reference levels, and (4) knowledge sharing. The candidates would be expected to mainly work as part of component 3.

PhD position 1: Improving emission factors for various forest change processes:

The focus of the work will be on the acquisition, estimation and synthesis to provide improved emission factors for various forest change processes relevant to REDD+. Research will include engagement on ongoing fieldwork to measure emission factors in-situ, synthesis of the published literature on this issue and to integrate remote sensing and ground data to provide biomass change estimates for different types of changes in different parts of the tropics (forest clearing/land use change, shifting cultivation, selective logging, fuelwood collection etc.). Work should lead into the evaluation of options for forest monitoring on national and sub-national levels using remote sensing and ground-based surveys with particular emphasis on assessing efficient approaches, evolving technologies and improve the linkage between monitoring, reporting and verification and national policies for REDD.

PhD position 2: Integrated monitoring for estimating GHG emissions from forests and agriculture in tropical countries

The focus of the research is to develop an integrated monitoring framework that considers both GHG emissions from human induced changes in forests and from agriculture activities on the landscape and national scale. The aim is to test a suitable integration of remote sensing and ground data to provide GHG emission estimates for different types from deforestation, forest degradation and different agricultural practices and in particular their linkages in different parts of the tropics. The work requires engagement in ongoing fieldwork and to work as part of an international team of experts.

Resources and supervision:

The PhD position is supported by CIFOR with a monthly stipend of €1700 for 4 years. The PhD research is conducted mainly at the Centre for Geo-Information at Wageningen University (NL) and the related Graduate School (www.pe-rc.nl) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Martin Herold in close collaboration with CIFOR partners. The candidates are also expected to spend some time at CIFOR’s headquarter in Bogor, Indonesia, and to engage in fieldwork and international exchange and meetings.

Requirements:

Young and motivated researcher with MSc degree and related experiences in Forestry, Remote Sensing, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Land Management or a related field. Strong English skills are fundamental. Knowledge about the REDD process and technical skills to handle spatial data and remote sensing is appreciated. Experiences and willingness to work with and in developing tropical countries is important.
