Within the Earth & Life Institute of the UCL (www.uclouvain.be, Belgium), we are looking for highly motivated candidates to take up a PhD position. The positions are available within the project « Soil organic carbon stabilization: Pedogenic and Geomorphic interactions ». This is a collaborative project between the Centre for Earth & Climate Research (TECLIM; Pr. Kristof Van Oost) and the Centre for Environmental Sciences (ELIe; Pr. Bruno Delvaux and Dr. Jean-Thomas Cornelis).
The candidates will explore an integrative approach that considers climate, soil, vegetation and geomorphic controls on long-term C stabilization. The project aims at the empirical quantification of C content in aqueous and solid phases for a range of (i) pedogenetic (formation of highly reactive secondary phases), (ii) vegetation (quality and quantity of organic matter), (iii) climatic (rainfall and temperature), and (iv) geomorphic conditions (influence of geomorphic evolution of soil properties derived from lateral transport).
PhD 1 will be responsible for conducting field trips and detailed experimental works in the laboratory in order to quantify the main pedogenic mechanisms governing the soil capacity to stabilize SOC and to assess C balance in the atmosphere, pedosphere and hydrosphere continuum. This part of project involves physico-chemical analysis of soil via ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, XPS, SEM-EDX, TOC analyser, XRD, FTIR and specific extractions. This position requires strong laboratory skills and broad interests in soil sciences, geochemistry and biogeochemical cycles. PhD 2 will use manipulation experiments and in situ measurements (including carbon characterisation and radionuclide measurement) for a broad range of geomorphic settings and will develop a model integrating these data.
Requirements
 a MSc degree or equivalent in soil science, environmental sciences, geography, ecology or related discipline.
 English language proficiency;
 Possess good social and communication skills.
Interested candidates should send a CV, a motivation letter and the names and addresses of three referees before 31st of January by e-mail to Kristof Van Oost and Jean-Thomas Cornelis. ([email protected], [email protected]). Feel free to contact us for specific questions prior to submitting your application.
